Writer's Block: Nature or nurture

Do you think your moods are controlled by your brain chemistry or that your brain chemistry dictates your moods? Do you believe people are born with particular emotional temperaments or that they are primarily shaped by environmental factors?

Now that's an interesting question which we often meet in my psychology classes and there are many sides but in my opinion it's usually a combination of natural factors, like DNA, and environmental factors like your family. And I think this has also been proved by several studies on twins that grew up in different families. In some cases of course, one factor might be more influential than the other like a dysfunctional family that will help the genetic factor affect a person's mood or general temperament. I'm too lazy to write more right now lol.

Μέσα απ'τα φώτα αυτής της πόλης που σκοτώνει για λεφτά...

Finally I'm back in Athens and hopefully for good this time because going back and forth between Athens and Mytilene has started to get tiring this summer lol. It's surprising how I really miss it, despite the awful afternoon heat and the endless times waiting for the bus to go home. Especially now it is just full of tourists and I love it! So many different people and different languages =) It is not as pretty as any other European city because it doesn't have the 18th century renovated buildings like Paris or Vienna, however I have found the most interesting and beautiful places with just a little bit of search and wandering lol. And I would never exchange it to go study in any other Greek city, ew. Even my sister claims to get agoraphobia among so many strangers, prefering to be in a cafe with familiar faces. For me being among strangers is safety and peacefulness because I don't have to greet people I don't like or give account to anyone for what I'm doing. Which is the norm in Mytilene. My dad complained from the first day about the hustle and bustle of the traffic, but then again so does everyone else. If you ask most Atheneans they'll tell you they don't like living here and would rather be on an island all year long (which is not so ideal, I can assure you), that it is a dirty and expensive city but in the end it's up to us to make it better, isn't it? I just hate it when older adults usually complain about it not being clean yet it's them that put out their cigarettes on pavements and streets or just litter public places in general. And when local organisations try to do something good like prevent another free space from becoming a mall and try to turn it into a park instead, they are called anarchists or whatever and usually are met with police force lol. Which shows that at least some people here care and it's mostly young people. Anyways, to finish my rant all I mean to say is that things like that make me want to stay in Athens. Because it's a living city with festivals and happenings and culture and activisms, not an industrial copy =)

And these are inhabitants of Athens that never go away even in summer! Overweight pigeons <3

No one is illegal

One of the good things I believe I have gained from being politically conscious (and hopefully active) is that I can see things around me that previously escaped my attention. Like, two nights ago I was out with the two Marias, Anna and Dimitris (whom to my surprise I had greatly missed) and we were taking a walk along the port. At some point I saw a boat of the Italian coastguard leaving with its lights turned off and I realized how many times this must have happened in the past and I didn't even notice. You see, the Polizia Frontiera is probably part of the Frontex, that is a special unit of EU army that is supposed to "protect" the european borders, aka guard the borders from immigrants. In other words, when they find immigrants that try to cross the borders from Turkey to Greece (and that's why they end up in Mytilene) in plastic boats -or anything that floats for that matter- they catch them and either hold them here or send them back to Turkey. And by "catch" I mean hold them as if they are criminals, in horrid inhuman conditions, until they decide to either send them somewhere else. In any case, these people are just treated horribly and the government is even thinking of making concentration camps for them, which of course calls "temporary shelters". Apart from that, we continued our walk up to the "lighthouse" thingy and I saw a pierced plastic boat on the rocks which means that either some immigrants made it all the way to the port (which I doubt) or most likely they were caught and their boat was thrown there. Immigration here is becoming one major issue with one side claiming we should prevent more immigrants from coming into the country because omg they are the cause of all evils and the other side (with which I agree more) saying that most of them are politically persecuted or economic immigrants, like many Europeans were when they left to America. But of course that is the side least heard. Anyways, to finish this rant I hope to participate in the No Border camping that is scheduled to take place here in Lesvos at the end of August. There will be many activisms for immigrants and hopefully we'll do something useful or raise awareness about this issue and try not to let racism and xenophobia spread the way it does now =(

To sum up with this rant, all I wanted to say is that I feel like I see more of the world around me and sadly not all of it is rainbows and butterflies.

This is a nice map showing the change of empires around Europe, Africa and Asia. It's as much for the history freaks as much to show people that everything changes no matter how vast it is. =)) It only takes one minute and it's fun to watch. Or at least for me, the history nerd.

I sparkled for a girl!

So I did a great sin and wasted a few hours of my life watching Twilight. It would actually be funny if I had someone with me to comment about its ridiculousness.  So many questions I wanted to ask! Like, why did the girl have such a retarded, half opened mouth most of the time and didn't know to talk? It wasn't like she had many lines. Why with her first day at school all boys liked her? I get she's pretty iceberg though.

And they put Muse in it, Muse. *sob* Why did you let this happen Matthew Bellamy?

However, I found two good things about Twilight. It's spoofs gave me pains in the stomach from laughing.

I am  a VAMPIRE. HEAR ME TWINKLE by Cleolinda Jones. She's brilliant.

And this is the spoof trailer of Twilight. Srsly watch it.

He wants my candy bar!

I vote for these guys to direct the next movies. If we are going to get bored another three times, at least we can laugh XD

Writer's Block: Legends of Rock

There are a few concerts that go down in musical history—Altamont, Woodstock, Live Aid, the Hannah Montana Best of Both Worlds tour—as legendary experiences. What live show stands as legend in your own experience?

From 2.30 it's Linkin Park in Athens. I died. Just a little bit. Now everytime I pass from Plaka, Acropolis or the Herodium I'll be like "ajhksigfjkse LP walked here!" Sad, I know.

I'll try to post pics from Lemnos tomorrow. Crazy fun it was.

First entry yay!

So for a first post in my new journal I thought I'd post something happy. For most people anyway. Or if not happy, at least amusing! It's about the woman who turned into a man through hormones but became pregnant. The whole article on how men can change to women and the opposite can be found here http://www.slate.com/id/2194977/

But I thought to post the most interesting parts and save people from the trouble.

But of course, all opinions are accepted. Anywhere else but here. :D

How awesome is that? This is also a good solution for hysterical mothers who think that if their son is gay they won't have grandchildren lol!
